NBi FlexPack, a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of custom flexible packaging, has announced the integration of electron beam (eBeam) cast-and-cure technology into its production platform, enabling holographic and watermark-style embellishments on digitally printed flexible packaging.

The converter says it is among a limited number of companies globally operating a custom-built 30-inch eBeam cast-and-cure unit.

“NBi FlexPack is one of the few companies in the world that has a custom-made 30” eBeam cast and cure unit,” states Jeff Leto, vice president of sales at NBi FlexPack. “This technology gives us the power to offer brand owners a competitive advantage — delivering packaging with distinct embellishment and the latest advancement in brand protection.”

Cast-and-cure is a process that uses a patterned film or plate in combination with a coating to transfer a holographic or watermark-like effect onto the packaging surface. Traditionally associated with specialty films, the technique creates light-reflective visual effects similar to the security features found on identification cards and currency.

By utilizing eBeam coatings rather than conventional UV systems, the process enables high-impact embellishment without the need for pre-laminated holographic films. The result, according to the company, is a premium decorative finish produced in a more streamlined and potentially cost-efficient manner.

In addition to its shelf impact, the technology adds a layer of brand protection. Embedded holographic or watermark elements are difficult to replicate, providing a deterrent against counterfeiting and product diversion.

NBi says the system allows brand owners to apply holographic effects either as spot embellishments in targeted areas or across the entire package surface. The approach can help differentiate products in competitive retail environments while reducing the complexity and cost typically associated with specialty holographic substrates.

With the launch, NBi FlexPack continues to expand its flexible packaging capabilities, combining digital print with advanced finishing technologies aimed at enhancing aesthetics, improving efficiency, and supporting brand security initiatives.
